What We Do at Forres

Findhorn River Circular

Here is another great ride. Researched by my good friend David Fulford it is a circular ride from Forres taking in Logie Steading, Randolph’s Leap, Daltulich Bridge, Ardolach Bell Tower, Moyness Stone Circle, Brodie Castle and of course The Findhorn River.

This ride of some 35 miles leaves Forres on the Grantown  A940 road. You need Ordnance Survey Landranger map 27 Nairn & Forres. Follow the A940 for about 7 miles before turning right onto the B9007 Carrbridge Road. Descend past the entrance to Logie Steading visitors centre and cross The Findhorn River bridge just before Randolph’s Leap which is 100 yards or so further on the right. Continue on the B9007 for about 2 miles and turn right onto a minor road signposted Daltulich Bridge. Descend steeply to the bridge for wonderful views up and down The Findhorn. Follow the road round to the left after the bridge ( do not turn right signposted Darnaway ) and continue two miles or so until you reach the A939 Nairn to Grantown road. Turn left and then almost immediately right  signposted Ardclach and Dulsie Bridge.

After a mile or so you will see a sign pointing left to Ardoloch Bell  Tower ½ mile. This is an interesting little building an is worth visiting. If you visit return to the Dulsie Bridge road and turn left ( continue straight ahead if choosing not to visit ) and continue past a small lake/pond for about a mile and a half until you see a gate on the left ( locked to vehicles ) where there is a pedestrian gate also. There is a signpost with a 2000 metre walk sign. This descends to the River Findhorn and can be cycled some of the way. It is worth walking down to the river for a picnic as it is very beautiful. There are fishermans stiles at intervals to access the waters edge. When we were there numerous salmon were leaping.

Return to the tarmac road by the same way and then turn right back the way you came until you reach the small lake ( do not turn right at the lake) and continue to the main road. Turn left in the direction of Nairn and after 1 and a half miles turn right signposted Brodie. Continue for several miles gently downhill always following Brodie signs. As you descend glimpses of The Moray Firth come into view. When you reach a crossroad you will find the Moyness Bronze Age Stone Circle. Go straight on and turn right at a T junction and freewheel down to the A96. Take care. Cross and turn right and after ½ mile or so you reach Brodie Countryfare. Just past this turn left and immediately right and follow minor roads through Dyke  back to Forres.

On a nice day take your time. Visit Logie Steading for a coffee, a great second hand book shop and art gallery. Check out Randolph’s Leap, Ardoloch Bell Tower, Moyness Stone Circle and visit Brodie Castle. A wonderful day out. Mostly up before lunch and mostly down after.
