Forres to Nairn
This ride again follows the well signposted cycle route 1 along quiet country lanes and is accessed from the A96 signposted Waterford passing by the White and Company large industrial warehouse. Cross the railway line and pick up the route 1 signs turning left just in front of the Ben Romach distillery. The distillery welcomes visitors. Continue to the end of Waterford Road and take the unpaved track left in front of the council recycling and waste disposal site (waste busters) and follow this through the woods alongside the Findhorn River and cross the bridge to Broom of Moy where the route reverts to tarmac.
From here just follow the route signs through Kintessack and Dyke to Brodie Castle, home to the Brodie family until the late 20th century. This is a 16th century tower house with later building additions made in the 17th and 19th centuries. Standing in lovely grounds it is open to visitors from April to
October. It has a shop and tearoom and there are daily tours. Brodie Castle has a major collection of paintings, fine French furniture and Chinese porcelain. Well worth a visit. The grounds are open all year round and refreshments can also be taken at Brodie Countryfare or The Old Mill Restaurant on the nearby A96.
After Brodie simply follow the route signs for six miles to Nairn. There are several places to eat on the high street or turn right after the bridge down to the harbour where there is a pleasant little café. Nairn has a wonderful beach very close to the harbour so pack your swimming cosie in summer for a swim before the return ride.
Return by the same route or if you have Landranger map number 27 Forres and Nairn you can make your way back by minor roads on the south side of the A96. The distance to Nairn is 12 miles but route 1 is almost completely flat so it is a very easy and pleasant ride.
