Ride from Forres to Skye
This is a super five day ride from Forres to Skye using two exceptional scenic train journeys as well as cycling.
Day one. Cycle from Forres to Inverness using national cycle route 1. There is a Youth Hostel in Inverness and heaps of accommodation. If feeling fit you can continue out of Inverness on the B862 which goes down the quiet side of Loch Ness to Dores where The Dores Inn is a high class restaurant and there are a limited number of B&Bs.
Day Two. Continue down Loch Ness on the B862 Either from Inverness or Dores (take the Loch side road B852 to Foyers and then climb up to connect with the B862 again. This climbs steadily up to 400 metres after which it is downhill all the way to Fort Augustus where there is an excellent Youth Hostel Morag's Lodge and loads of accommodation.
Day Three. Follow The Great Glen Way Cycle and Walking route along the Caledonian Canal, Loch Oich, Loch Lochy to Gairlochy and then take either the B8004 or Caledonian Canal all the way to Corpach. Then follow the A830and A82 for a short distance into Fort William. There is a Youth Hostel in Glen Nevis ( another 3 miles ).
Day Four. Take the train ( Jacobite Steam Train ) to Mallaig. Catch the Ferry to Armadale, Isle of Skye. Cycle up the A851 to Broadford where there is accommodation and a Youth Hostel.
Day Five. Cycle the A87 to Kyle of Lochalsh crossing the Skye Bridge. Take the most scenic rail trip in Britain from Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness and change trains to return to Forres.
We did this trip in October but advise booking accommodation and trains during busy periods. Options to extend this route, for example more time on Skye, are numerous. Much of The Great Glen Cycle Route is off tarmac but the canal towpath and forest roads are not rough and can be cycled with ordinary Hybrid touring bikes. We hope you enjoy this route as much as we did.
